ROOFERS Wandsworth

Slate, tile and flat roofs across Wandsworth

Wandsworth roofs are dominated by Victorian slate on the terraces running through Tonsleys, Southfields and Earlsfield, with mansion-block flat roofs and balcony decks around the Common, and a steady share of conversion-flat rear-extension roofs across the borough. JP Building Services are roofers in Wandsworth covering the whole of SW18. For non-roofing work see property maintenance in Wandsworth.

OUR PROCESS

How we run a Wandsworth roofing job

Many Wandsworth terraces share chimney stacks with the neighbour, which sometimes means coordinating scaffold or repair access; here is how an SW18 roofing job runs.

Inspection and condition photos

Many Wandsworth terraces have shared chimney stacks and tight side returns. We get on the roof or work from extension ladders to capture clear photos of every roof slope, the chimneys and the lead detail before you commit.

Written quote with materials named

The quote names the slate or tile, the underlay grade, the ventilation route and the lead detail. Fixed price, named materials, like-for-like comparable with another contractor's quote.

Scheduled with a weather window

We do not start a strip-and-recover the day before a forecast storm. Scaffold and skip permits with Wandsworth Council are arranged before the start date and adjusted if the forecast forces a delay.

PROPERTIES WE WORK ON

Property types we look after in Wandsworth

Wandsworth roofs split into three groups. The Victorian terraces dominate, found right across the borough with slate pitched roofs, original lead at the chimneys and frequently a secondary flat roof over the rear extension. The mansion blocks and larger Edwardian semis ringing the Common carry a mix of pitched main roofs and complex flat-roof zones over balconies and bays. Conversion flats add a separate consideration, with rear-extension flat roofs that are often shared with the neighbour and need coordination on any work. The post-war stock through the Town Centre and along the railway carries different specifications again.

WHY CHOOSE US

Why Wandsworth owners choose JP Building Services

Four things Wandsworth Common-side homeowners and Earlsfield letting agents value about a roofer that does the lead by hand and matches slate properly.

Re-roofed across SW18

From Tonsleys terraces to Common-side mansion blocks, Earlsfield Victorian rows and Southfields conversion flats, the team has worked on the full Wandsworth roof mix.

Hand-formed lead

On chimneys, parapets and abutments hand-formed lead lasts. Pre-formed sections are faster but they fail at the joints sooner. We boss lead by hand on Wandsworth conservation work so the dressing follows the original profile.

Materials matched to the property

On a slate Victorian terrace we will not push you onto concrete tile to save a few pounds. Reclaim Welsh slate is used where it is the right answer for blending into a partial repair.

Tidy on residential streets

Skips, scaffold, parking and noise matter on a residential road. We organise the logistics with the council, brief the neighbours where the scaffold blocks shared access and tidy the site as we go.

EXPERTISE

Re-roofing the Victorian terraces around Wandsworth Common

The Victorian terraces ringing Wandsworth Common and running through Earlsfield and Southfields were built between roughly 1880 and 1905, almost always with Welsh slate on a pitched roof with original lead detail. Welsh slate has a working life of 80 to 120 years, which means a lot of these roofs are now reaching the end of their original lifespan.

When we re-roof one of these terraces we strip in sections rather than the whole roof at once so the building stays weathertight. As we strip we sort the original slate into three piles: sound and reusable, sound but tired, and broken. The sound slate goes back on the front face where it is most visible from the street; new or reclaim slate fills the rear. Underlay is breathable membrane on new battens, not the old torching.

Lead at the chimney back gutter, the side abutments and any parapet detail is hand-formed in milled lead with stepped flashings worked into the brick joint. Ridge tiles bed back in lime mortar so they move with the seasons. Vents go in at eaves and ridge in line with current guidance. See chimney repair for the related stack work.
