Repointing is easy to get wrong and hard to put right once it has been done badly. The mortar has to be raked out to the correct depth, mixed to the right strength for the age of the property, and packed in with care. Rush any of those steps, or use the wrong mix on the wrong bricks, and you end up with joints that crack again within a few years, or worse, mortar that is harder than the brick itself and starts pulling it apart from the inside.
